Chunky Yarns                                         At Heaths Country Store we pride ourselves in offering a good and interesting range of Chunkys Once upon a time a chunky use to mean anything beyond a 3 or 4ply thickness yarn. Doubleknit use to be called a chunky! However, today it generally refers to a weight of yarn that knits a flexible material on 6mm to 8mm needles.     Mille Colori from Lang Switzaland   Just to confuse everyone Mille Colori is one of those chunkies that isn't a chunky! It looks like an aran, to some even a DK, but its a lightweight chunky for 6mm to 7mm needles.     This is a wonderfully soft yarn with amazing and sophisticated striping.   It is very difficult to keep this page up to date as Lang tends to change its colours around about every four months!     I have knit many things with Mille Colori; garments, cushions, rugs, scarves and so on and never been dissapointed with it.   One of my joys is to knit with more than one colour scheme and blend the striping of one into another.     We tend to stock around 10 colour ways at any given time   Any garments knit with this yarn tend to be considerably lighter than other chunkies. The strange thing, however, is that they are not any lighter than most other chunkies, it just seems so. You get a kind of lovely bounce to the yarn.     A half wool and acrylic mix Mille Colori comes in a 50g ball and has 92m of yarn   Price - £3.40     Opale from Adriafil in Italy This garment was knit by Erna, the mother of our landlord. It was knit to an aran weight pattern showing that even heavy chunkies can have some flexibility I think a chevron design to this strong striping black to colour scheme just enhances the contrasting effects and softens any rigidity of banding.       Opale is a mohair, wool, synthetic mixture.
